Museoeurope The reminescences of the European heritage are based on cunning, abduction and rape, "committed" by the desire of Greek gods. Medieval Europe takes us on a journey into the world of knighthood, courtliness and the development of manners, the kiss of peace, devotion and love, and above faith and hope. Renaissance Europe originates from the beauty of the spirit and sensuality, the Enlightenment descends from reason, while the times of the Bourgeoisie and the Modern Age stem from the ideals of equality, freedom and solidarity.
The project Museoeurope symbolically refers to the Renaissance saying about the "knowledge that revives what is dying", and "art which brings back into light what has descended into darkness". The project is dedicated to the exchange of ideas and experiences, knowledge and heritage, which unfolds the different faces of Europe.

Kitchen Debate - Debata o kuhinji

Museoeurope 2017 focuses on kitchen, food, and nutrition. This year's project establishes the relations between the fireplace and the technological development of the kitchen, between food in the sense of aesthetic examination and the importance of its local production, between eating disorders and public consumption of food, between food within the art, culture, and politics. The symposium will also highlight examples of good practice in museum exhibitions and pedagogical programmes.

The Exhibition

Kitchen Debate - Debata o kuhinji

The conception of the exhibition is based on the book How we survived communism and even laughed (1991) by the Croatian writer, Slavenka Drakulič (1949). The author describes her visits to her friends in the Eastern bloc countries which always took part in the kitchens of her hostesses. Their gatherings were hearty and despite the want full of playful joy and optimism.
The exhibition is divided into nine content-related parts and highlights the kitchen spaces within different periods and social classes, and connects particular kinds of food with a story of a person that personifies the content-related part.

INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM

CONTENT OF THE SYMPOSIUMABSTRACTPROGRAMME OF THE SYMPOSIUM

The Regional Museum Maribor is inviting you to take part at the international symposium entitled Kitchen Debate - Debata o kuhinji. The symposium will be held in the Knight's Hall of the Maribor castle from 19th - 21st of October 2017.

We are expecting that the papers, which are to be presented at the symposium, will address the technological development of the kitchen, for which it seems that it has lost its primordial connection to the fireplace and is becoming the ultimate laboratory of the food industry within sophisticated design solutions. We wish to raise the debate about food in the sense of aesthetical examination, the influence of worldviews and lifestyles on the selection of nutrition, and also the increased awareness concerned with the importance of its local production. While the television programmes are filled with cooking contents, we witness a rise of eating disorders among young people. Why does every celebrity feel the urge to demonstrate hers/his cooking skills? Is it possible to come to fame through the stomachs of people? To what extent is cooking the preserve of modern-day women, men, and children? Is the KITCHEN DEBATE between Nixon and Khrushchev that took place in the year 1959 once more becoming topical?

The papers will be divided into the following five sets of topics:
1. Set of topics: From the Fireplace to the Food Industry;
2. Set of topics: The Kitchen, a Space of Innovations;
3. Set of topics: Food Between Need, Pleasure, and Addiction;
4. Set of topics: Kitchen and Food within Art, Culture, and Politics in
5. Set of topics: Kitchen and Food within Museum Exhibitions and Pedagogical Programmes.

We invite archaeologists, ethnologists, historians, art historians, architects, designers, sociologists, museologists, food technologists, psychologists, doctors and etc. to take part.
